Real Madrid are reportedly competing with Atletico Madrid to sign highly-rated Real Sociedad defender Jon Martin, who could become the first major arrival of Jose Mourinho’s second spell in charge at the Bernabeu.
According to reports in Spain, Mourinho is set to return to Real Madrid this summer in a dramatic move that would mark his second stint at the club. The Portuguese manager is expected to leave Benfica and take over in Madrid as the club looks to restore stability following a disappointing campaign.
Club president Florentino Perez reportedly believes Mourinho can help re-establish discipline within the squad and get leading players such as Kylian Mbappe, Federico Valverde, Aurelien Tchouameni, Antonio Rudiger and Alvaro Carreras performing consistently again.
The experienced manager is also expected to reconnect the team with supporters after growing frustration around recent performances.
Real Madrid Enter Race for Jon Martin
Strengthening central defence is understood to be one of Madrid’s priorities this summer, and Jon Martin has emerged as a leading target following his breakthrough season with Real Sociedad.
The 20-year-old defender has impressed heavily in La Liga and is now regarded as one of the league’s standout young prospects. Reports claim Real Madrid have closely monitored his progress throughout the season and are now preparing to challenge Atletico Madrid for his signature.
Martin is reportedly viewed internally at Madrid as an ideal long-term option who could potentially become a key figure in the club’s defence for years to come.
However, Atletico Madrid are also believed to be strong admirers of the Spain Under-21 international and are considering making their own move.
Real Sociedad are expected to demand the full €60 million (£52m) release clause for the young defender, reflecting how highly they value one of the club’s brightest emerging stars.
While the price is substantial for a player with limited top-flight experience, both Madrid clubs reportedly believe Martin has the quality and potential to justify the investment.
Martin Seen as Modern Defensive Talent
Martin has earned praise for his composure in possession and his ability to build attacks from the back, qualities increasingly valued in modern defenders.
Standing at 6ft 1in, he is also strong aerially and has impressed with his pace, tackling and reading of the game throughout the season.
Mourinho Also Linked With Other Targets
Separate reports in Spain have suggested Mourinho could also push Real Madrid to reignite interest in Manchester City midfielder Rodri, who has long been admired by the club.
However, TEAMtalk recently reported that Manchester City director of football Hugo Viana is working aggressively to ensure the Spain international remains at the Etihad Stadium.
Meanwhile, The Independent has claimed Mourinho would be interested in reuniting with Marcus Rashford, having previously worked with the England forward at Manchester United.
Rashford is currently on loan at Barcelona, who hold an option to sign him permanently for around €30m (£26m). The Catalan club are reportedly hoping to extend his stay through another loan agreement instead.
Despite speculation surrounding Mourinho’s interest, a move to Real Madrid currently appears unlikely given Rashford’s reported desire to remain at Barcelona permanently after enjoying a strong season in Spain.
