Ever since January, a move away from Paris Saint-Germain has been almost certain for Edinson Cavani. The Uruguayan is a modern legend at the club but made it clear that he wanted to move on after falling down the pecking order. Such is his desire to leave that he has refused to sign a new short-term deal with the Parisians, meaning he will miss out on a potential UEFA Champions League title.
However, the move that seemed most likely was a return to Italy. Internazionale were heavily linked, but the likely breakdown of a move for Lautaro Martinez to Barcelona means that this might not come through as expected. Instead, we could see ‘El Matador’ make a move to Atletico Madrid.
For years, he has been linked to Atletico Madrid and seen as the ideal Diego Simeone forward. However, it looks like he might complete a move to the Spanish outfit once and for all. Given Atletico’s goal scoring issues this year, it would be a wise move for both player and club. Having the chance to shine in Spain would also give Cavani a chance to dominate another major European league.
Tentative links to Brazil have also been touted, with Flamengo deemed the keenest and most realistic move for Cavani. However, a move to Brazil seems unlikely – at least at this moment in time. For now, all signs point to Cavani wearing the red and white stripes of Atletico Madrid in the 2020-21 season.
