While that might be a headline you’ve read more than once, it appears like Barcelona have signed a tremendous young full-back. 20-year-old Emerson has made his move from Atletico MG to the Catalan giants official, completing the move and adding more youthful depth and vigor to a squad that has slowly but surely needed a touch of youthful effervescence included.
Playing an impressive 23 games in the 2018 Brasileirao campaign, he comes to the Barcelona team probably good enough to make a few appearances. The move, which has seen Barca pay around €12m for the youngster, should see the club begin to give more chances to youth players.
One interesting quandary of this move, though, is the future of Senegal player Moussa Wague. Signed for Barcelona after a fine World Cup in 2018, the 20-year-old is now likely further down the pecking order with the arrival of another right-back.
With both Sergi Roberto and Nelson Semedo ahead of him, it’s hard to see just how the youngster is going to pick up the game time that you would expect. For the young Brazilian in Emerson, though, this looks to be a fine time to make the move.
Already impressing in the Brazilian domestic game, a move to the European continent now makes a lot of sense. However, it would be unsurprising to see the youngster move out on loan when the summer window finally comes up, with the chance to bed-in to Barcelona taken first.
